BTS Dominates With "IDOL"; Soompi's K-Pop Music Chart 2018, October Week 1
BTS’s “IDOL” is the first song in more than six years to spend five weeks on top of our chart! Taking advantage of a slow charting period with few releases (the current week’s chart reflects the movements on the last week of September, which happened to be the Chuseok holidays in Korea) “IDOL” remains solid on the chart and is the only song to score over 900 points this week. The last song to spend this long on top of our chart was PSY’s mega hit “Gangnam Style” in 2012 and it spent six weeks as No. 1. Congratulations again to BTS!
Sunmi’s “Siren” came very close to overtaking “IDOL” as No. 1 last week. However, the gap between these two songs is widened again this week in favor of “IDOL.” Therefore, “Siren” remains at No. 2.
There are three new songs in the top 10 this week! Moving up eight spots to No. 3 is GOT7’s “Lullaby.” This is the title song on GOT7’s third full album, “Present: YOU,” and is an urban dance song with a synth sound and a house beat. The lyrics describe the emotions of a love that brings such happiness, like a sweet lullaby. “Lullaby” won all the music shows last week but its independent chart scores are lower than the top two songs, which is why it settles at No. 3 this week.
Moving up 12 spots to No. 6 is Roy Kim’s latest hit “The Hardest Part.” This self-written ballad is about a man who is torn to say the words to initiate a break up with his girlfriend.
Veteran singer Lim Chang Jung probably sets a record for the longest title with his latest hit song that contains 17 hangul characters, translated to “There Has Never Been A Day I Haven’t Loved You.” This is the title song from Lim Chang Jung’s 14th studio album. Unlike his usual ballads, this song is a mixture of R&B and pop generes, and features two distinct parts: the drowsy acoustic guitar in the first part of the song and the Irish orchestral sound in the second half of the song.
