"Mr. Queen" Achieves 2nd-Highest Premiere Ratings Of Any Weekend Drama In tvN History
Shin Hye Sun and Kim Jung Hyun’s new drama “Mr. Queen” is off to a strong start!
“Mr. Queen” is a tvN historical fantasy-comedy drama about a man from modern times whose soul gets trapped in the body of a queen from the Joseon dynasty. Shin Hye Sun stars as Kim So Yong, the Joseon queen with the soul of Blue House chef Jang Bong Hwan trapped inside her, while Kim Jung Hyun plays her husband King Cheoljong.
On December 12, the new drama premiered to No. 1 ratings right out of the gate. According to Nielsen Korea, the first episode of “Mr. Queen” scored an average nationwide rating of 8.0 percent and a peak of 9.9 percent, taking first place in its time slot across all cable channels. (The drama performed even better in the Seoul metropolitan area, where it managed to break into the double-digits and reach a peak of 11.0 percent for the night.)
Not only did the premiere of “Mr. Queen” mark a drastic rise in viewership compared to its predecessor “Start-Up” (the drama that previously occupied its time slot), but it also achieved the second-highest viewership ratings of any weekend drama in tvN history to date. At present, “Mr. Queen” has been bested only by the 2018 hit “Mr. Sunshine,” which premiered to an average nationwide rating of 8.9 percent.
“Mr. Queen” also took first place in its time slot across all channels—including public broadcast networks—among the key demographic of viewers ages 20 to 49, with whom it scored an average nationwide rating of 4.0 percent and a peak of 4.9 percent.
Meanwhile, OCN’s “The Uncanny Counter” saw a slight decline in viewership for its fifth episode, which scored an average nationwide rating of 6.1 percent.
JTBC’s new drama “Hush” also saw a dip in ratings, with its second episode falling to a nationwide average of 2.6 percent, while TV Chosun’s “The Goddess of Revenge” trailed close behind with an average rating of 2.5 percent.
In the public broadcast network realm, KBS 2TV’s “Homemade Love Story” continued its reign as the most-watched drama of Saturday night, scoring average nationwide ratings of 25.6 percent and 30.8 percent for its two parts.
Finally, SBS’s “Delayed Justice” scored average nationwide ratings of 3.9 percent and 5.0 percent for its 12th episode, which marked the drama’s final broadcast of 2020. After a three-week hiatus, the drama will be returning in 2021 with a new actor taking over the role previously played by Bae Sung Woo, who left the cast this week after it came to light that he was recently booked for a DUI (driving under the influence). Lee Jung Jae is currently in talks to replace the actor.
