Are you looking for a relaxing and feel-good drama to watch? Then the latest modern romance C-drama “Hi Venus” might just be for you! The story follows Ye Shi Lan (Liang Jie), a pediatrician working in a remote village as a part of a social welfare program. She has been waiting for her notice to return to An Xing Hospital. One day, Shi Lan has an unusual encounter with Lu Zhao Xi (Joseph Zeng), the newly elected CEO of An Xing Hospital. Due to a mistaken identity mix-up, Shi Lan does not believe Zhao Xi is the new CEO, leading to a rocky start to their relationship. Later on, Shi Lan returns to An Xing Hospital and is assigned to be Zhao Xi’s temporary assistant. The two end up putting the past behind them and begin to develop mutual respect and understanding for each other.
On paper, “Hi Venus” sounds like your typical rich CEO and poor girl office romance drama, but it’s a stress-free watch that does away with toxic exes, disapproving meddlesome parents, and ridiculous misunderstandings. Instead, the drama’s biggest charm is its portrayal of healthy relationships, relatable and engaging characters, and wonderfully written dialogue that is both humorous and inspiring. Although the story is simple, “Hi Venus” brings plenty of positive vibes leading you to crave more as a drama viewer. Plus, the story is written by screenwriter Wang Xiong Cheng, whose previous works include the popular dramas “Go Ahead,” “The Day of Becoming You,” and “Find Yourself.” If this isn’t enough to convince you, check out these top reasons why you should add “Hi Venus” to your binge-list!
Relatable female lead
Our female lead is Ye Shi Lan, a pediatrician at An Xing Hospital, and is temporarily working at Taoyuan Clinic in a remote mountainous village. She can be described as strong and independent with a strong sense of responsibility toward her patients. Being upright and direct, Shi Lan is considered unsociable as she hates work gossip and sucking up to colleagues and superiors. Many viewers of the drama will find Ye Shi Lan very relatable; she is insecure, guarded, and has low self-esteem and trust issues due to her unfortunate family background. Despite her cold demeanor, she is actually gentle and kind with a upstanding sense of justice.
What is wonderful about “Hi Venus” is being able to witness Shi Lan’s immense character growth throughout the drama as she slowly becomes more self-confident, vibrant, and outgoing. Not only is she very self-aware of her flaws, but she learns from her mistakes and is not embarrassed to acknowledge it and ask for forgiveness. As viewers, it is a delight to see Shi Lan become a better version of herself with a clearer sense of purpose in life and loving herself more. You can’t help but root for Shi Lan!
Warmhearted and positive male lead
Next up is our male lead Lu Zhao Xi, the newly appointed CEO of An Xing Hospital. Unlike the aloof, arrogant, and overbearing CEOs seen in most dramas, Zhao Xi is the complete opposite. In fact, he is a considerate, warmhearted, and a sensible man. “Hi Venus” sets the bar exceptionally high for male lead characters. Not only does Zhao Xi have a great upbringing, but he was raised well by his parents, making him thoughtful, empathetic, and open-minded. What is most refreshing about Zhao Xi is that he acknowledges the privilege of coming from a wealthy family and puts his best foot forward to manage An Xing Hospital to the best of his ability. Despite his exemplary background, he remains humble, respectful, and down-to-earth. He even has a great relationship with his parents, friends, and fellow colleagues. Zhao Xi is the kind of person everyone deserves to have in their life.
OTP: Opposites attract
This OTP’s relationship can be described as opposites attract. Lu Zhao Xi is an extroverted and easygoing person with a positive attitude, whereas Ye Shi Lan is introverted and reserved with a more pessimistic mindset. However, they perfectly balance each other and inspire each other to become better individuals. “Hi Venus” does a fantastic job in portraying an organic story of two people falling in love. Starting off as strangers, they overcome inaccurate first impressions, leading to a budding friendship, and finally become a romantic couple. Despite their differences, Zhao Xi and Shi Lan are both mature and sensible adults who compliment and understand each other well. Communication is the key in their relationship where they often share meaningful conversations that is full of flirty banter, warm teasing, and thought-provoking exchanges.
Our OTP also addresses the elephant in the room, which is the stark power contrast between Zhao Xi and Shi Lan. One of the major insecurities Shi Lan has being in a relationship Zhao Xi is that she is not as financially well off as he is. Not only does Shi Lan point out this fact directly, Zhao Xi also acknowledges her insecurity and lets her know he is understanding and accepting of it. The best part of their relationship is that they have mutual admiration, empathy, and respect for each other. It takes some time for Zhao Xi to break through Shi Lan’s stone walls, but he does it with sincerity and patience. Shi Lan describes Zhao Xi as her savior (her Venus), but Zhao Xi points out that she is her own savior and that he just encouraged her from the sidelines.
Adorable secondary couple
Another highlight of “Hi Venus” is the two supporting characters Lin Kai Wen (Zhou Zi Han) and Yao Jia Jia (Li Lin Fei). Lin Kai Wen is Lu Zhao Shi’s special assistant. He can be described as a serious, diligent, and straightforward person. Although Lin Kai Wen appears calm and rational, he actually has a secret hobby of reading online romance novels. He is also Lu Zhao Shi’s relationship advisor as he uses his knowledge from romance novels to deduce his boss’s relationship progress with Ye Shi Lan.
On the other hand, Yao Jia Jia is Ye Shi Lan’s best friend and housemate with a cheerful and optimistic nature. She is a writer of online romance novels and works at a coffee shop where she likes to observe customers to find inspiration for her writing. Just like Lin Kai Wen, Yao Jia Jia is a love consultant for Ye Shi Lan, offering interesting advice and insights.
Kai Wen is a regular customer at the coffee shop that Jia Jia works at. Jia Jia observes Kai Wen and uses him as inspiration for a character in her novel. Unbeknownst to Jia Jia, Kai Wen is an avid reader of her online novel and discovers he is being depicted as a villain in the story. He confronts Jia Jia and forces her to change the storyline. Their relationship is off to a bumpy start, but the two soon become good friends, with Kai Wen even offering to become her agent to promote her novels. Over time, feelings develop as the pair grow closer, eventually transitioning into a couple. Lin Kai Wen and Yao Jia Jia are an adorable secondary couple, quite similar to the main couple, who go from friends to lovers through mutual respect, understanding, and affection. Both are incredibly perceptive and intelligent, offering the main couple huge support with their wisdom and guidance.
Lovely OST
No drama is complete without a beautiful accompanying soundtrack. There are four songs on the OST, all perfectly placed in each scene to accentuate different moods from the humorous to romantic moments in “Hi Venus.” The insert songs “Fortunate to Meet You” by Claire Guo and “Time Engraved in My Heart” by Zhao Bei Er beautifully highlight the heart-fluttering and sweet scenes between Zhao Xi and Shi Lan. Another great track is the opening theme song “With You” by Qian Xi, a romantic English ballad depicting the deep feelings of the OTP. The male lead Joseph Zeng also lends his voice for the ending theme song “The Joy of Having You,” which is a sweet upbeat song that expresses Zhao Xi’s love towards Shi Lan.
