Review

“A fun, yet sappy movie – great for watching with your date”

Do Re Mi Pa So La Si Do first portrays itself as a “rock band movie” but instead concentrates on three main characters: Eun Gyu, (Jang Geun-seok, Beethoven Virus) Jung Won, (Cha Ye-Ryeon), and Hee Won (Jeong Ee-Cheol) that become embroiled in a love triangle.  As these love triangles typically are, a complex mess that has Jung Won( who was the childhood friend of Hee Won), falls in love with Eun Gyu, (who has been the best friend to Hee Won for the past three years) now play in a successful band together.

The threat of suicide by Hee Won, although childish and infinitely selfish (one wonders just how far this character will go for himself) along with the now crazy Eun Gyu seems like a never-ending push pull with Jung Won caught in the middle going from one to the other. Eun Gyu’s character and his “sudden accident” that left him crazy, as well as the subsequent “miracle” was clichéd, and seemed like the director suddenly realized he was running out of time and needed to end the movie.   It also seems that this type of “convenient accidents” are used so often in dramas that it left a sour taste in my mouth from what was a fairly decent movie up until that point.  The supporting characters seemed to do little to help the character or plot development, and despite the brother/sister conflict it seemed that Jung Won’s character who was so so sensitive to Eun Gyu and Hee Won, was too hostile and cold to her own brother.

While the sappy and somewhat cheesy love dialog got a bit grating at points, overall the movie did a good job of creating a dramatic setting where one can really see the immature yet fiercely heated love that only the young (and the restless) can get away with, and for that many of us will forgive the movies somewhat lacking points.

“Good4aDate” Movie Rating:  4/5 (Highly Recommended)
