Soompi Fanfix Spotlight: Week 6

Hey Soompiers,

We’ve reached the halfway point of the first Soompi Fic Marathon with 107 fics (and counting!) This past week, we saw gasoos posed as the Seven Deadly Sins, recommendations for less known fics in the fic section, and thematic elements of stories broken down into “recipes.” We’ve also started a round robin story that you can chime in on until this Friday.

Something new — Soompiers are invited to suggest writing and reading prompts they’d like to see for the next round of the marathon. If you’d like to submit some of your own, follow this link to the marathon’s main thread. We’ll be announcing the chosen prompts this Sunday, so keep an eye out to see if your suggestion is picked!

7/31 Edit: Round 5’s prompts have been announced. Here are the prompts’ titles to give you a clue of what they’re about: Echo in my heart, Sincerely Yours (P.S. I love you), Oxymora, and A Haiku for You.
Keep up with our discussion thread for updates on points; join our writing and reading threads as a freelancer if you missed the sign ups deadline but would like to participate.

A teaser from the Writing Remix Round Robin story (written by Yoyo of Team 2)
When Lena finally awoke and finished her breakfast with a big grin on her face; she decided to call that number Yev had given her the night before.

“Hello?” The other person spoke when he picked up the phone.

“Hi, this is Lena, and you are?” Lena asked with a bright smile.

“This is… It’s, your neighbour, Jaewon.” He replied.

“Jaewon? The stupid guy who lives in front of us with that annoying dog!?” Lena screamed through the phone.

Sin: Choi Seung Hyun as Wrath

I hate myself.

What kind of best friend steals your ex-girlfriend?

Yeah, I understand. Lee Hyori is not my girlfriend anymore, but didn’t he know that I was not over her? Does he not know the untold rule of friendship where “Bros were before hos?” Did he not think our friendship was more important than a girl?

A girl, I’m still in love with.

Kwon Ji Yong, I’m taking you down.

I pulled the cap over my face to conceal my eyes as I watch the two of them hold hands and ogle each other’s eyes. I felt my pulse quicken and my muscles tightening when I watched Hyori slip the shoe off her feet to play footsy with Ji Yong. She flushed, smiled shyly while Ji Yong seemed to enjoy it, kissing her on the nose.

That should be me.

I should be the one that is beside her.

“Yah, Seung Hyun. I want you to meet my girlfriend.”

I nodded off the waitress as I notice she was going to approach me. She cursed, muttering how rude I was when she was going to refill my coffee for me, but that’s ok. I came here with a mission.

A mission to take down the two people I love that have betrayed me.

I held onto the coffee cup tightly as I take a sip to watch the lovebirds drift to Cloud 9, while I drop all the way down to hell. I could feel that burning sensation within me, the feeling of wanting to kill. I was furious. How can they do this to me? Was I being used all along?

I watched them leave, as I threw my money onto the table and quickly followed them behind.

I will make them suffer.

“Your girlfriend?”

I pulled my trench coat closer to my body to hide part of my face as I followed the two of them out of the café and into the parking lot. This would be a perfect chance, but seeing the security cameras made me feel queasy. I got into my car quickly and tailgated them.

“Seung Hyun ah, will you be happy for me?”

“Very happy, Ji Yong. I wish you happiness.”

I would never forget that smile on Ji Yong’s face when he told me who is girlfriend was. Kwon Ji Yong, how can you break your best friend’s heart like that.

YOU KNEW.

YOU KNEW SHE WAS MINE.

YOU KNEW SHE WAS THE GIRL CHOI SEUNG HYUN COULD NEVER FORGET AND LET GO.

WHY DID YOU STEAL HER AWAY FROM ME?

WHY DID YOU ROB MY SOUL AWAY?

My goal.

Get my soul back.

In exchange, do the devil’s bidding.

I flicked open the pocket knife that was concealed behind my back as I slowly approached them. They had stopped in front of a beach, holding hands and walking down the boardwalk.

Oh, how I wished I was the one who held her hand and walked down the boardwalk, just to watch the sunset with her.

I walked up slowly, knife behind my back.

I laughed in my head.

My revenge will be perfect.

“Watch out, Hyori!” Ji Yong pushed Hyori to the side and held onto the wrist of which my hand was holding the knife. “Seung Hyun, what’s wrong?”

I simply smiled at him.

I could see fear in his eyes.

“Why are you angry?” Ji Yong asked, softly.

I did not reply, trying to fling him off. We struggled for a good few minutes with Hyori staring at me, her body frozen. I was getting fed-up with Ji Yong’s attempts to stop me, so I flung his arm away and gave him a good kick. I sent him flying off the boardwalk and onto the sandy beach.

“Ji Yong!” I heard Hyori mouthed. There were no sounds that came out of her mouth as she stood there rooted in her spot. Her shaking frail body told me how much she feared me and this made me feel…powerful.

“I want you to know, Lee Hyori, that you killed me,” I hissed grabbing her hand.

As if she finally came to her senses, she began struggling back avoiding the knife I was pointing at her. She didn’t say anything, but we struggled and I can see Ji Yong getting up slowly to approach us.

I did the unstoppable.

I hate myself.

I grabbed Hyori’s hand and slipped the knife into her hand, wrapping my fingers around her hand to enclose around the knife and through the struggling, I knew that I wanted it to stop. I knew I wanted her to end everything.

I was pissed off of myself. What did I do that she had to leave me? What did I do for her to choose my best friend over me? I smiled at the horror of her face as she noticed the knife piercing into my heart.

“You killed me, Lee Hyori.”

The worst thing you can ever do is to kill yourself.

The highest form of suicide is the wrath against yourself where all your anger is directed towards oneself.

This is my punishment.

To sin, wrathfully.

Submission: Choi Seunghyun as Lust

Tonight was going to be the night. Seunghyun couldn’t put if off any longer, and he sure as hell was going to not let her put it off any longer as well. She was not going to deny the attraction that sizzled between them; it was so intense that it would be a crime to not do anything about it.

Kim Yoobin.

He saw her the moment she crossed the granite pathway from the garden into the main house. Her footsteps were dainty, almost like a carefree frolic. It wasn’t fair that she should be so unaffected. Standing on the second floor from the balcony of his room, he waited as she neared the house and let herself through the kitchen’s back door.

Smiling, a mischievous glint in his slanted eyes, he decided it was time.

With long strides and prompt footsteps, his feet fell silently against the thick carpet from the hallway that wound through the grand staircase. He crossed the living room and made his way to the back of the house, where the kitchen was. Standing at the opened doorway, he watched as she softly hummed to herself, her hips swaying to a tune only she heard. She had donned on a pink apron, bordered with roses and green vines. He had seen her worn that many times, but for some reason that evening, she made it look too darn sexy.

Not for long though. If things went his way, she wouldn’t be in that outfit for long.

҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉

“You’re early.”

Yoobin jumped at the warm breath that caressed her neck. She twisted around to glare at Seunghyun . . .

Only to be disconcerted by the fact that he was too close, almost pressing her against the counter.

“What else do you expect?” she retorted, pushing him away until there was enough distance between them to decelerate her heartbeat. “If I’m to cook for your frivolous party, I can’t help but to be early.”

She walked to the pantry to gather the crackers and baking ingredients she would need. To her annoyance, he followed her. As she looked through the assortment of crackers, she could feel his imposing presence by the door. His eyes seemed to scorch right through her layers of clothing. Yoobin had never felt so nervous around him. She had known him too long that he had become familiar. She didn’t know why it felt different that evening. With no other target, she aimed her anger at him.

“If you’re just going to stand there, then make yourself helpful.” She didn’t expect him to, but she had to say it anyway for spite. Turning away, she stood on tiptoes to remove the silver platters where the hor’dourves would be served. Her body stiffened as she felt him align his body closely to hers and reach for the plates.

“Where should I put these?”

“The kitchen would do,” she snapped, feeling out of sorts by the close contact between them.

“Yes, ma’am!” he saluted before he disappear out to the kitchen.

Yoobin placed her hand against her chest, trying to calm herself. The rogue. What was he doing in the kitchen anyway? She had always catered his parties, but he had never been so . . .involved before. It was baffling.

After she had convinced herself that she was calm and wouldn’t be swayed by him, she stepped out from the pantry with the crackers and flour. Setting the items on the island, she began to open the bag of flour.

“What are you doing?”

Yoobin frowned. “Making brownies, of course.”

“What for?”

The man was a walking mystery. “Well, when you told me about this party, I assumed—”

“You assume nothing.”

“What—”

He grabbed her wrist and pulled her out from the kitchen. Her protest began when she realized that he was heading upstairs. “Seunghyun, what do you think you’re doing?” Her panic struck her full force when he led her to his bedroom. “Have you lost your mind?!” She tried to resist him, by grounding her heels in the carpet and pulling her hand away.

But he was much too strong for her.

He finally let go of her when they were in his room and he had locked the door. Yoobin turned to him with her fiercest scowl, her hands on her hips. “What kind of joke are you trying to play here?”

He advanced towards her.

She backed away . . .until her knees hit the edge of the bed and she fell backwards.

He fell after her, their faces mere inches apart. Silently, Yoobin told herself that he would not hurt her. He would never hurt her on purpose. He would never take her by force.

She held her breath as his hand held hers. Then gently, his fingers made a trail along her arms. Gooseflesh formed on her skin. He reached over and drew a bag she hadn’t realized was there. “Wear this,” he said, placing the bag in her hand.

Yoobin blinked. The moment was gone. He now stood at the feet of the bed, away from her. Shaking her head, Yoobin sat up and glanced inside the bag. She turned to him, confusion written on her face. “Why am I wearing this? I’m only the caterer, it would be silly to dress in this.”

“Wear it.”

“Now, listen here Seunghyun, I don’t know what you’re trying to accomplish here but I will not have you pushing me around!”

He approached her and cupped one side of her face in his warm palm. It was soothing. “Just wear it. Please.” He traced her bottom lip with the pad of his thumb. Before she could think of all the excuses she had about why it was not a good idea, he was already gone.

҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉

Yoobin undid her ponytail and let her hair loose, running the brush a few times through the strands. When she had donned on the dark green dress and its matching heels, she made her way downstairs. The material felt foreign to her; it was smooth and soft, gliding against her body with every move she made. It was sin. The straps were made with sparkly rhinestones, which were cold against her shoulder. The dress reached the top of her knees, leaving too much of her legs bare.

She found him in the ballroom. Two sides of the room were made of tall glass windows, and he stood at the far corner. “Just so you know, I look ridiculous in this and I’m taking it off.”

Seunghyun turned away from his standpoint. “Come here.”

For some unknown reason, Yoobin didn’t resist his command. As though drawn by the magnetism in his eyes, she made her way across the room, with its numerous chandeliers glinting from the ceiling. Yoobin should have felt alarmed at the way his eyes were studying every inch of her, but a soft glow warmed her face at being so openly admired. She knew it was vain, but she couldn’t help it.

“Turn around.”

Yoobin rolled her eyes. “Am I modeling this outfit for your next bimbo girlfriend?” she teased. “Should I give a twirl too?”

“Just turn around and stay still. And it would be nice if you could stay quiet for five minutes.”

Yoobin would usually give him a smart retort, but her traitorous body did as he asked. She turned around and listened as he neared her. Then he placed his arms around her and drew her closer. She closed her eyes and simply let her senses feel as her back curved until her body fit his perfectly.

“Beautiful,” he whispered.

She didn’t realized what he had done until she felt the cold necklace clasped around her neck. Yoobin quickly stepped away, fingering the expensive jewelry with its endless rows of diamonds. “I told you I’m not wearing this dress.”

He grinned. “I don’t mind you out of it either.”

“That’s not what I meant—”

“Let’s have some champagne,” he interrupted, pulling her along towards the buffet tables. He grabbed two stem glasses and handed her one.

“You are in denial big time, mister,” Yoobin muttered.

“Am I?” he asked, his eyes looking at her from the tip of the glass. “Or is it you who’s in denial about us?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

He sighed. “I have matching earrings.”

“They would look adorable on you.”

He ignored her jibe and reached into his pocket. He pulled out a small box and extracted a pair of long earrings, studded with diamonds as well. He expertly put the earrings on her, his fingers lingering at the base of her throat for a fraction too long.

Yoobin swallowed. “These would look silly with my apron.”

“Do I have to spell it out to you?” When she didn’t respond, he leaned forward and brushed his lips against hers. “Tonight, you’re not my caterer, Yoobin.” He placed his hand on her hip and pulled her close. He whispered into her ear, “Tonight, you are my guest of honor.”

“Don’t be an a$$,” Yoobin retorted.

He merely gave her a grin and then walked away.

As the guests slowly arrived, Seunghyun pulled her with him and introduced her to everyone. True to his words, Yoobin did feel like the guest of honor. She felt overwhelmed by how much attention he was paying to her. He never left her side. He had his hand on her back, as though declaring to everyone there that she was his. Yoobin probably should have protested at such chauvinist behavior, but perhaps the champagne was getting to her head.

When no one was looking, he would whisper into her ear, making her smile. If he had to leave her for any short time, he would plant a soft kiss on her shoulder, or her cheek, or near her ears. In no certain way, he was indirectly telling her that this was merely the appetizer to the main course. Yoobin shivered at the thought and then she realized it was about time she admitted what was happening.

Kim Yoobin, the nanny’s daughter, had fallen foolishly in love with the master’s son. She should have seen it coming, but she had been lying to herself about the depth of her feelings. She had convinced herself that the adoration she felt for him was simply due to the fact that they grew up together as playmates. Yoobin was only eight, and Seunghyun was ten, when she and her mother moved into their back house to serve their family.

His mother, bless the cold witch’s heart, was not happy about the attachment between the two. But Seunghyun, the little devil, had gone through ten nannies in one year. Only with Yoobin was he a decent child. Then she sent him abroad for university. He had returned for only a year, but nothing changed between him and Yoobin. They picked up right where they left off. Yoobin knew his mother would probably turn in her grave if she saw what was about to happen. Her son was courting the nanny’s daughter in public.

But Yoobin wouldn’t sell herself short. Despite the attraction between them, the only reason she would share her bed with a man was if there was mutual love, nothing less.

҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉

It was past midnight when the last of the guests left the house. Seunghyun had been ready to throw everyone out five hours ago, but he held onto his control and counted the hours when it would just be him and Yoobin.

“I’ve sent the hired help home,” Seunghyun declared, stepping into the small tearoom she was in. The room was cozy, with a fireplace that had not been used since the end of winter. There were three love seats in the center, surrounding a glass top table. Colorful pillows adorned each sofa. During the day, the vibrant colors brought life to the room. However, at the moment, only a lamp was on, hiding the corners of the room in darkness.

“I should leave as well.” She stood up.

“Stay for a bit.”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea.” She took purposeful steps towards the door.

“Didn’t this evening mean anything to you?”

“Seunghyun, declaring me as your next play toy doesn’t prove anything. Which, by the way, I will not be.”

He frowned. “I wasn’t doing that.”

“Yes, you were. You thought I’d swoon at your feet like your bimbos always do. Just because you gave me some diamonds and showcased me, don’t expect me to fall into bed with you.”

“I wasn’t trying to buy you.”

“Oh no? Then what were you trying to prove tonight?”

“Nothing, damn it!”

“Don’t lie to me.” She narrowed her eyes at him. He didn’t know how she did it, but she always managed to put him in his place, making him feel as though he was a misbehaving schoolboy.

He took a deep breath. “What I’m trying to prove was . . .was the attraction between us. And don’t you deny it too.”

“Yes,” she admitted, her voice a soft whisper. “There is that.”

“What should we do about it?”

“Absolutely nothing.”

“Look who’s the liar now,” he said, walking towards her, cornering her.

“Don’t, Seunghyun.”

“Are you saying you’re perfectly happy with us doing nothing about it? Pretending as though there’s nothing between us?”

“Yes, that’s what I’m saying.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes—”

He kissed her. He realized he liked kissing her. It was the only time she wasn’t opening her mouth to lecture him. It was the only time he felt he had her at his fingertips. He pulled her close and buried his hands in her hair.

She pushed him away. “This is not going to prove anything!”

He was exasperated. “You are the most stubborn woman I have ever—”

“Don’t do this to me, Seunghyun.” Her voice suddenly turned begging. She wore her heart in her eyes. That was something he had always admired about her. Feeling ashamed, he looked away. “This whole thing is nothing but pure and simple lust to you. After this, you may be able to walk away, unscathed. But for me . . .for me, I wouldn’t be able to live with myself. This may be a game to you. After you have what you want, you’ll be bored and it’ll be game over. But I respect myself too much to let you do that to me.”

She walked away. Stopping at the doorway, she said, “I’ll turn in my resignation letter tomorrow. And . . .and I’ll find a new place.”

Once she was out of the room, Seunghyun slumped onto the floor. He covered his face in his hands.

No, he thought. What she said wasn’t true. She wasn’t just a game to him. She was . . .she was . . .

She was all the truth to the lies in his life. She was the light that shone through his darkness. She was the laughter to his tears. She had always shown him the right path, had always believed him to achieve his fullest potential. She had always been correct about everything. But this time, she was wrong.

He didn’t just lust after her.

He may very well be falling in love with her.
