Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2012 - June Week 1
For the third straight week, TaeTiSeo’s “Twinkle” is our No. 1 song. The sub-unit trio from Girls’ Generation is still way ahead of their competitions, almost 100 points more than the No. 2 song, which is the highest new entry to the top 10 this week. That is Infinite’s “The Chaser”, moving up 10 spots from last week’s No. 12 all the way to second. Infinite was the top male group on our chart last year and they finally come back to release their latest mini-album “Infinitize”. A preview ballad “Only Tears” was released prior to the actual album release. “The Chaser” is the title song. It is a fresh dance number. With “Twinkle” slowly dropping in points, “The Chaser” may gain enough ground to become our next No. 1 song.
Still going strong at No. 3 is Sistar’s former No. 1 song “Alone”. In fact, it just missed being No. 2 again by just two points. “Alone” has spent the last six weeks in the top three with two weeks being No. 1. This song should be among the top hits when we summarize the half year chart at the end of this month.
There are two other new songs on the top 10 this week. At No. 4, it is Baek Ji Young’s “Good Boy”, her first dance hit in three years. When she first debuted, Baek Ji Young was famous for her dance hits. In the last few years, she has primarily performed ballads and even earned the title of drama OST ballad queen with her numerous hits on popular dramas. Now she is returning to her dance roots with this latest hit. “Good Boy” is a funky dance number featuring Yong Jun Hyung of Beast. It is our highest chart debut this week and will have a great chance to move into the top three next week and perhaps even challenge for the top spot.
The other new top 10 song is at No. 9, a somewhat surprised entry into the top 10. Brave Guys’ score their first top 10 hit with “I Dun (Money) Care”. Not long ago, they just missed the top 10 with their debut song “Wait And Ready”. Despite their group name, Brave Guys are actually a mixed group with three guys and a girl. Even though they just debuted this year, the quartet is not considered new in the industry as their members have appeared in shows like “Gag Concert”. Their music is fun and comic style pop hip-hop genre. “I Dun (Money) Care” moves up four spots this week to No. 9.

YESTERDAY ONCE MORE:
Baek Ji Young – 대시 (Dash)
Genre: Pop Dance
Album: Baek Ji Young Vol. 2 (2000) Track 3
Comment: If we talk about a K-pop singer that has gone through a roller coaster career with the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, Baek Ji Young fits this description perfectly. She debuted back in 1999 and was very popular in the early 2000s with a series of Latin dance beat hit songs. Her good singing skills with her husky voice together with a sexy image made her very popular among fans.
However, she was involved in a sex video scandal and was banned from major TV stations for a few years. She also went into a long hiatus repackaging herself and her music. Baek Ji Young came back in 2006 with a ballad “I Won’t Love”, a genre that she did not try before but fitted so well with her husky voice. “I Won’t Love” became one of the top hits in 2006 and her career is being reborn.
Since then, she has focused mainly on ballads and in recent years she participated in many drama OST songs, earning her the title of drama OST queen. Now, at age 37, she is coming back with a dance hit “Good Boy”. Despite being one of the most senior active female artists now, she has lost a step on her dance moves just like when we were watching her in her early days.
“Dash” is coming from Beak Ji Young’s second album “Rouge”, released in 2000. It is considered an old skool dance hit from an era where K-Pop is just starting to gain recognition. Many artists of those days are long gone now but Baek Ji Young is still going strong today. It is amazing considered how much she has gone through over the years, and also the evolution of her music style is very unique.
