Highlights: "Pride and Prejudice" Episodes 12 and 13

Something that I find really satisfying about “Pride and Prejudice” is that it knows the exact right balance between revelation and withholding. For every puzzle piece we receive, we find out that the overall design is bigger than we thought it was and that we’ll need a lot more pieces before we can see the full picture. So, we get to feel the satisfaction of finding out new information, while never losing that pull to find out more. This week is no exception.

These were my five favorite scenes of “Pride and Prejudice” episodes 12 and 13:

1. Moon Hee Man actually stands up for Dong Chi

Although I think that Moon Hee Man is, ultimately, a good guy, he doesn’t always act like one. So it was a pleasant surprise to see him stand up for Dong Chi against his boss, Chief Prosecutor Oh. Even though I agree with Chief Prosecutor Oh that Dong Chi is responsible for the fact that Song Ah Reum was attacked while under his protection, I liked seeing Prosecutor Moon doing something nice for his subordinate.

2. Kang Soo and Chang Gi share a room

…and it’s the least fun sleepover ever. Honestly, I don’t know how to feel here. On the one hand, I do feel bad for Chang Gi, who feels like he’s on the verge of losing one of the most important people in his life. On the other hand, Kang Soo deserves to know the truth—and I would have a lot of trouble blaming him if he were to hate Chang Gi once he finds out that Chang Gi killed his mother.

3. Chang Gi confesses

Admittedly, he confesses to Dong Chi and not to Kang Soo, but it’s still nice to see him being honest with somebody. In addition to his part in the hit-and-run, he reveals here that he had no idea about Kang Soo being kidnapped, which is a relief, to say the least (given that Moon Hee Man meets with the kidnapper at the end of the episode, it looks like he doesn’t share Chang Gi’s innocence).

4. Fun times vacuuming

What a sweet little scene this was—and what a great reminder that our three leads have excellent comic chemistry.

5. “Han Byeol died instead of me.”

This scene was just upsetting. Park Soon Bae’s information leads to yet another discovery, this time about the connection between Kang Soo and Han Byeol. They met and were kidnapped together (the kidnapper, faced with two boys of roughly the same age, wearing the same coat, wasn’t sure which one was the actual target, so he just kidnapped them both). But Kang Soo escaped, and Han Byeol was killed. Both Yeol Moo and Kang Soo are completely gutted by this discovery, and Baek Jin Hee and Lee Tae Hwan do their best to break my heart.

I do have a question about the logistics of Han Byeol’s death, though. I’m assuming he died after Kang Soo escaped. Was he killed because the kidnapper thought he really was the witness to the hit-and-run or because he was now a witness to the kidnapping? And why were there no repeat attempts on Kang Soo’s life? Once Han Byeol’s body was found, it would have been obvious that he wasn’t the witness to the hit-and-run (since he had a family), and Kang Soo’s location obviously wasn’t a secret, since Chang Gi was able to find him and give Grandma money. So why did the kidnapper never try again? Did he find out about the amnesia and assume it wasn’t necessary? Or am I just missing something?
