Highlights: "Pinocchio" Episode 10

Guess what? “Pinocchio” is still awesome! In episode 10, Dal Po keeps on hoping that if he just pretends that nothing is wrong, then everything will magically be okay. But so long as the unfailingly honest In Ha and the unfailingly creepy Jae Myung are in his life, nothing will stay hidden for long.

These were my five favorite scenes of “Pinocchio” episode 10:

1. “When I was Ki Ha Myung, I hated you.”

When In Ha asks Dal Po if he hates her because of what her mother did to his family, he has a simple answer: when he was Ki Ha Myung, he did. Now, as Choi Dal Po, he doesn’t. I find this fascinating, because I think the divide between the two parts of Dal Po’s life is so much messier than this. Ha Myung and Dal Po aren’t two separate entities, cleanly cut off from each other. They overlap and bleed together—that’s how I see it, anyway. Dal Po wouldn’t be so conflicted over Jae Myung if he had completely left his old life behind.

Now, I do think that Dal Po’s feelings towards In Ha are simple—he loves her and that’s it. But that’s the only simple thing about him, and I can’t wait to see what happens when the part of Dal Po that is Ha Myung starts making itself known.

2. “The truth won’t go away because you cover it up”

Gyo Dong is so wise. He might accept Dal Po’s decision to keep silent about Jae Myung’s deadly extracurricular activities, but he’s right when he points out that the truth won’t stay hidden forever. Jae Myung will always be a murderer, and one day Dal Po will have to deal with that. Listen to your smart sunbae, Dal Po!

3. Bum Jo might not be so bad after all

I know I’ve been pretty hard on Bum Jo, but I started to warm to him in this scene, as he expresses his complicated feelings towards In Ha. Yes, he likes her, but that’s not all—it turns out he’s been sticking so closely to her because he feels like he owes her for the thirteen years of intercepted text messages. I found it really interesting that Bum Jo feels guilty before In Ha, and I think it adds a texture to his interactions with her that I didn’t see before.

4. Song Cha Ok’s lecture

Man alive, Jin Kyung is good in this role. I know I’m not Song Cha Ok’s biggest fan, but I’m quickly becoming a huge fan of Jin Kyung, and this lecture scene was a fantastic showcase for her. There was a warmth and liveliness to her presentation that she usually doesn’t show around In Ha. I also found her ideas about fact and impact to be really interesting, even if they weren’t exactly revolutionary (I must confess my favorite part of her speech is right at the beginning when she says she’s just going to skip questions of media ethics. My advice: stop, turn around, go back to media ethics, and spend a long time studying them!).

Everything around Cha Ok in this scene was great as well, from the incognito YGN staff to In Ha’s impassioned take-down of her mother. I love how much mileage this drama is getting from Dal Po’s speech at the YGN tryouts: last week, it served as a bitter rebuke to Dal Po’s irresponsibility, and here, it inspires In Ha to finally beat her mother in a battle of words.

5. “It’s me, hyung. I’m Ha Myung.”

Oh my goodness. The cat’s out of the bag. Gyo Dong was right—the truth always finds a way to assert itself. But now that Jae Myung knows that his little brother has been alive this whole time, what happens? I have no idea, and I need for time to start moving faster so that I can find out sooner!
