Highlights: "Heard It Through the Grapevine" Episode 3

Having the baby was the easy part, it turns out. Life as parents is the really tough part for Bom and In Sang—especially since they aren’t officially allowed to see their baby! “Heard It Through the Grapevine” is shaping up into a top-notch soap opera, and I couldn’t be happier. The only problem is that two hours a week in this world might not be enough.

These were my five favorite scenes from “Heard It Through the Grapevine” episode 3:

1. The “help” are on In Sang and Bom’s side!

What a relief that the husband-and-wife butler-housekeeper duo genuinely care about In Sang and Bom and are willing to help them. In this dangerous environment, these two need all the help they can get. 

2. Dad wants to know everything about Bom’s family, and he wants to know now

I understand that In Sang’s parents are in a state of total shock, and that their world has been rocked to its foundations by this baby. But I just can’t bring myself to warm up to them, and this scene is a great example of why. Jung Ho having one of his employees investigate Bom’s family to the smallest details really rubs me the wrong way. By learning everything he can about her family (and especially about their financial situation), Jung Ho is making it so that whenever he eventually does meet Bom’s parents, he’ll be their superior. He’ll know more about them than they could possibly know about him. That just lacks basic human decency, in my opinion. Would it really be so hard to approach them as equals, understanding that your mutual grandchild has disrupted their lives as well?

3. Dad called the police on Bom’s father? Seriously?

In which Han Jung Ho lacks basic human decency, part 2: Seo Hyung Shik hasn’t seen his teenage daughter since she gave birth. It is not unreasonable that he should want to see her, nor that he should go looking for her. But instead of recognizing that Hyung Shik has every right to see his daughter (and his grandson!), Jung Ho calls the police on him. I am trying to have compassion for In Sang’s parents, but they are making it very difficult.

4. Baby visit!

In Sang/Bom scenes make me so very happy. I think a lot of that is due to Lee Joon and Go Ah Sung’s performances, which feel so natural and so perfectly adolescent. Their immaturity, their passion, their suffering—it’s all bubbling just under their skin, only waiting to erupt. This can be difficult to watch sometimes (In Sang’s constant crying feels extremely realistic, but I sort of want to tell him to get a grip!), but it makes for really compelling drama, and this lovely reunion sequence was no exception. From the visit to their baby to their impulsive make-out sessions (I find this drama really remarkable both for just how much In Sang and Bom kiss, but also for how wonderfully clumsy and unpracticed their kissing seems) to In Sang revealing his secret comic book collection, this was just a delightful set of scenes.

5. In Sang and Bom make a stand

It turns out In Sang has a backbone after all! This scene was so great—yes, In Sang is humiliatingly discovered by his parents hiding under a table, but that indignity is nothing compared to the perfection of him and Bom standing up for their relationship and their new family unit together. Something tells me In Sang’s parents won’t immediately be swayed, but it’s great to see our young heroes demanding to be treated the way they deserve.
