Halftime Report: 5 Reasons To Love "Hogu's Love"

I’m in love with “Hogu’s Love” (aka Fool’s Love). It’s because of Ho Gu (Choi Woo Shik). Kang. Ho. Gu.

There, I said it.

It’s the drama I look forward to the most, and I’m watching quite a few these days. The plot wastes no time in sweeping me along and I’m completely wrapped up in the awesome characters, fight scenes, and my favorite: twists!

“Hogu’s Love,” why do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

1. Ho Gu Ain’t No Pushover.

The former high school bread shuttle may look like a timid toothpick, but when Ho Gu mans up, ’tis a glorious thing. He’ll fight guys in elevators, pelting red bean fish bread like nobody’s business. (Note to self: next boyfriend must be willing to get into red bean fish bread fight in my honor.) He’ll show up at a baby daddy’s office and throw punches, demanding that the deadbeat take responsibility.

He’s not a great liar, but he’s not afraid to tell people when he is not that into something, for example, hamburgers (this means you, Coach-nim.)

2. Kang Ho Kyung Is The Sexiest, Coolest Girl Alive.

Ho Kyung (Lee Soo Kyung) has a particularly unique brand of sexy and awesome: she’s unapologetic and shoots to score. She’ll openly address sex – protected, responsible sex – to her own brother. She doesn’t sugarcoat and she’s fearless when it comes to expressing herself.

And she’s got one of the sexiest things a woman can have: confidence. You can’t imitate it, you can’t fake it – you either have it or you don’t. And our girl Ho Kyung – she’s got it.

Of late, she’s busy putting the moves on Byun Kang Chul (Im Seulong), which is proving to be quite the challenge. Her usual methods aren’t working – though she knows how to turn heads when she walks into a room. She’s gonna need to step up her game – this, I am definitely looking forward to.

3. TWIST! Byun Kang Chul’s Secretly Got The Hots For Ho Gu.

AH! I completely did not see this coming! Excuse me while I recover from the shock and awe.

Back in the day, by way of convenient mishaps, Kang Chul ended up sharing a kiss with Ho Gu – who was actually Ho Kyung (all the more reason to love Ho Kyung).

This was a righteously magnificent encounter – all chalked up to a single day.

Oh, but what a remarkable day that was. Ho Kyung picks off Ho Gu’s bullies (they think she’s Ho Gu, too) and coaxes Kang Chul into skipping school. Then she saves his backpack from a thief, partakes in some underage drinking with the bloke, and steals a kiss. This kiss becomes the crux of Kang Chul’s fondness of a certain persuasion – and for a certain Ho Gu we know.

4. Ho Gu Is Adorable.

Ho Gu sticks by Do Do Hee’s (UEE) side, from baby delivery to the motel where she keeps a low pro. He makes her a pot of birthday soup (mi yuk gook aka seaweed soup). He watches the baby for her. He lets Do Hee and the baby crash at his place. He buys red bean fish bread for the silver medalist. Hang on – I’ll give you a second to pick up your melted heart off the floor.

His heart breaks when he hears that Do Hee wants to give the baby up for adoption. He’s sensitive and caring and fights for the woman he loves – albeit she doesn’t request, deserve or warrant that kind of devotion – not yet, anyway. How selfless and sweet is this guy? (Sidenote: guys are not like this in real life. Not fair, K-Drama Powers That Be. Not fair.)

5. Ho Gu’s Friends Are Adorable.

Kim Tae Hee (Choi Jae Hwan) frets with Ho Gu over babysitting duties. Along with Shin Chung Jae (Lee Si Un), the three collectively press on with their webtoon comic. And Chung Jae stresses out marvelously over the do-or-die nature of their next manhwa issue.

Cupid’s arrows keep missing their mark – in brilliantly splendid ways.

Ho Gu loves Do Hee. Kang Chul loves Ho Gu – but actually possibly loves Ho Kyung. Ho Kyung is trying to woo Kang Chul.
