New Alliances and Betrayals in "Angry Mom" Episode 12

At this point in “Angry Mom”, Kang Ja (Kim Hee Sun) knows almost all there is to know about the bad guys’ misdeeds. The only problem is how to make that information public. In a world where all the normal lines of communication are controlled by corrupt politicians and businessmen, this means that Kang Ja still has half the battle ahead of her. Luckily, she has an awesome, expanding team of allies to help her get the job done.

These were my five favorite scenes of “Angry Mom” episode 12:

1. Ah Ran and Sang Tae finally make a connection

Nobody is more surprised than I am, but these beginning scenes between Ah Ran (Kim Yoo Jung) and Sang Tae were the highlight of the episode for me. Don’t get me wrong—I still have some issues with Sang Tae. He’s behaved so poorly that it’s impossible for him to be forgiven just because he has an unpleasant family life. But it’s clear that this is a kid in a lot of pain, who desperately needs a person who cares about him. And though Ah Ran may not quite be that person, she’s able to feel compassion for him after witnessing just how awful his father is. She’s able to commiserate with Sang Tae about living with only one parent. And then she’s able to use the sympathy building up between them to convince Sang Tae to keep silent about Bang Wool’s real identity.

But since this is “Angry Mom,” a drama that loves its viewers, the scene didn’t end there. Emboldened and inspired by their newfound connection, Sang Tae leans over to kiss Ah Ran… only to be interrupted by Kang Ja, who has been watching everything. The scene goes from heartbreaking to hilarious in the blink of an eye. I love this show!

2. Ah Ran sucks up to Sang Tae

Of course, since Sang Tae is very far from being an altruistic person, Ah Ran still has to work at making him keep quiet. This work mostly involves her spending time with him and acting like she enjoys it. The immense pleasure Sang Tae gets from that is really something to behold.

3. Gong Joo’s minions can get very jealous

Noh Ah (Ji Hyun Woo) finds out that hugging Gong Joo in front of her minions isn’t the best idea, as they have quite a jealous streak. It’s funny—at the beginning of this drama, I wasn’t a huge fan of the minions. But now, I find them immensely charming.

4. Bok Dong still wants to protect Bang Wool

Bok Dong (Ji Soo) can complain about Kang Ja’s lies and call her “ajumma” as much as he wants, but at the end of the day, there’s no hiding how strongly he cares about her. I love how complex this relationship is, and how Bok Dong’s crush is combined with his desire to avoid the mistakes of the past—to protect Kang Ja, because he couldn’t protect Yi Kyung.

5. Ae Yeon is a snake

I KNEW IT. I knew Ae Yeon wasn’t to be trusted. I knew she would betray Kang Ja in some way. But I confess that I didn’t predict Ae Yeon revealing Kang Ja’s true identity in front of the school administration.

Ae Yeon is a tough character, because she’s so abused by Chairman Hong that I really want to feel bad for her. But when she keeps on proving, over and over again, that the only thing she cares about is herself, I find it difficult to feel compassion. I hope that this betrayal will make Kang Ja see clearly that it’s time to start considering Ae Yeon to be a member of the enemy camp.
