Retiree Lives Childhood Dream by Creating Beautiful Ink Drawings for Granddaughter

A 73-year-old Korean man is living his childhood dream of becoming an artist by creating stunningly realistic ink drawings of Korea for his young granddaughter in Canada.

The man, identified as Mr. Shin, was featured recently on the SBS program “How Is That Possible” where he shares some of his work and demonstrates how he creates the incredibly intricate drawings.

According to the show, Mr. Shin had wanted to be a cartoonist when he was young, but his family prevented him from doing so. He therefore has no formal training and was only able to start drawing seriously after he retired.

Mr. Shin transforms photographs of Korean scenery into ink drawings that are composed of hundreds of thousands of tiny strokes. Using a 1mm pen gives him the precision he needs to execute the small but crucial details that bring his work to life.

Ink is a particularly difficult medium because it cannot be erased so it requires both intense concentration and impressive control and coordination. Because of this, his wife watches television on mute in their living room so she doesn’t disrupt Mr. Shin in his study while he’s working.

He does all this not only for his own artistic interests but also as a way to show the beauty of Korea to his granddaughter who lives in Canada.

Hopefully he will be recognized for his talent and effort now that his work has been displayed on TV!
