Suzy Succeeds With "Pretend"; Soompi's K-Pop Music Chart 2017, February Week 1
Suzy has the new No. 1 song on our chart with “Pretend.” This song was not even on the chart last week but with a strong showing on all chart sources, it was able to debut all the way at the top of our chart. The last time a song debuted at No. 1 on our chart was three years ago when Jellyfish Entertainment’s artists collaborated for their Christmas song “Winter Confession.”
“Pretend” is the pre-release single from Suzy’s first solo mini-album “Yes? No?” It is an urban R&B song that has a mysterious and dreamy atmosphere. The lyrics unravel the story of a person who lives with loneliness and unhappiness, but pretends to be happy on the outside.
While Suzy topped the charts multiple times with miss A and with the duet track “Dream” alongside EXO’s Baekhyun, this is her first time topping the charts as a solo artist.”Pretend” was also the winner on “Music Bank” last week. Congratulations to Suzy!
AOA’s “Excuse Me” remains at No. 2 while Akdong Musician’s “Last Goodbye” drops to No. 3 this week.
Along with Suzy’s new solo track, there are two new songs in the top 10 this week. Moving up six spots to No. 5 is Rain’s “The Best Present.” Written and produced by his good friend PSY, this is a ballad that incorporates string and piano melodies. The lyrics are about a man who describes his significant other as the best present he has received in his life. The song is custom made for Rain, as he and Kim Tae Hee just got married last month.
Moving up nine spots to No. 10 is Girls’ Generations’ Seohyun with “Don’t Say No.” Seohyun has many chart topping hits with Girls’ Generation and also with the sub-unit TaeTiSeo. “Don’t Say No” is the title track of Seohyun’s first mini-album of the same name. It is a dance song with a funky piano melody, and contains lyrics about a woman who finds it difficult to move on after a breakup. Seohyun’s alluring vocals are the highlight of this song.
