IU Prevails With "Palette"; Soompi’s K-Pop Music Chart 2017, May Week 1
IU’s “Palette” has become our new No. 1 song! This song wasn’t even on our chart last week, but with its promotion in full swing, it picked up three wins on music shows last week on “Inkigayo,” “M!Countdown,” and on the new “Music Core” chart ranking. “Palette” is the first song in more than three years to debut at No. 1 on our chart. Congratulations to IU!
“Palette” is one of the two title songs from IU’s fourth album. This self-written synth pop song by IU is about her own story growing up, with the lyrics about the beauty of youth. G-Dragon is featured on this song, making it a mega collaboration between superstars.
The strength of “Palette” caused last week’s top two songs WINNER’s “Really Really” and EXID’s “Night Rather Than Day” to drop one spots to No. 2 and 3, respectively.
There are three other new songs in the top 10 this week. Moving up 15 spots to No. 4 is a collaboration between SISTAR’s Hyorin and rising hip-hop artist Changmo. Their duet “BLUE MOON” is an R&B song about a man and a woman confessing to each other how they feel. Hyorin and Changmo show great chemistry in this song.
Up 30 big spots to No. 9 is LABOUM’s first ever top 10 hit “Hwi Hwi.” This is the title track from LABOUM’s mini-album “Miss This Kiss,” and is an addictive dance song that incorporates a whistling sound. The lyrics provide us an adorable depiction of a kiss between two lovers. “Hwi Hwi” was able to win on “Music Bank” last week over IU’s “Can’t Love You Anymore.”
IU has two songs in the top 10 this week. Besides the No. 1 song “Palette,” she also debuts another song “Dear Name” at No. 10. This song is the other title song on IU’s fourth album, and is a pop ballad that reminds us of “Secret” from her second album. “Dear Name” has fantastic string melody and the minimal arrangement highlights IU’s great vocals on this song.
