Jung Joon Young And Choi Jong Hoon's Sentencing Date For Their Appeal Trial Postponed

The sentencing hearing for Jung Joon Young and Choi Jong Hoon’s appeal trial has been postponed.

In November 2019, Jung Joon Young, Choi Jong Hoon, and three other individuals were charged with aggravated rape. Choi Jong Hoon and “Kim” received five-year prison sentences and Jung Joon Young received a six-year prison sentence. “Heo” received a sentence of eight months, suspended for two years, and “Kwon” received a sentence of four years. Both the defendants and the prosecution appealed the verdict, leading to a new round of hearings starting February 2020.

The sentencing hearing for the appeal trial was scheduled to be held on May 7. Before the hearing could take place, Choi Jong Hoon submitted a written agreement between him and the victim to the court. In sexual assault cases, the opinion of the victim as to punishment can be a mitigating factor.

On May 7, the Seoul High Court, led by head judge Yoon Jong Gu, announced that the sentencing date would be postponed to May 12.

On May 6, the day before the hearing was to take place, Choi Jong Hoon and Jung Joon Young’s lawyers submitted a request to delay the sentencing date. At the same time, Choi Jong Hoon submitted the aforementioned written agreement. The court did not agree to delay the sentencing date at the time, but announced the postponement on the day the hearing was to take place. The contents of Choi Jong Hoon’s written agreement was not revealed to the public.
